By definition, society must be able to respond to the questions that arise and guarantee the satisfaction of the needs of the population, as well as the integration of all people, regardless of their differences or conditions. While on the one hand there is a great deal of information available to everyone, in reality, society continues to face challenges and tries to find answers to such delicate issues like social integration. Many behaviors of differentiation, segregation and prejudice are observed, namely regarding people with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which distract and hinder the possibility of an adequate integration of these individuals into society. The Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized mainly by difficulties in three fundamental areas of human functioning: communication, socialization and behavior (Wing, 1981).Autism presents a societal challenge to all those involved: children with this syndrome, parents, relatives, educators/caregivers (teachers), health professionals, the scientific class, the media, and society in general. The current society is a digital society where most communication and learning is done through media (internet, television, among others). Most of the information is shared and seized by society through media. This reality inevitably raises the question of the reliability and veracity of the information circulating in these media. According to Levy (2011) what actually happens is that communication is used to manipulate public opinion by transforming it into a kind of collective intelligence, where more relevant than the veracity of information; what is retained; is the idea that is built and transmitted. This means that there is no longer any confidence in the objectivity of this information. Television series are a very important tool in the dissemination of information, especially on the problem of autism (Baron-Cohen, 2015).Autism is now a widely spoken and discussed topic in society, with multiple programs, films, documentaries and series addressing issues related to this condition. In some series the main character represents an individual with ASD. It is of utmost importance to understand if these portraits of autism are representative of the same. Thus, through a critical and interpretative analysis, this research defines as main objective: to analyze the representation of autism in two television series ("The Good Doctor" and "Atypical") to determine the perception of autism that is transmitted and to compare it with the perception of autism that is created by the series in Portuguese society. In addition, we intend to verify if the series represents the autistic reality. To reach these goals, a critical and interpretative approach and a qualitative methodology were adopted with interviews and questionnaires. The selected sample is non-probabilistic, intentional, combined, consisting of 52 participants with 2 filmmakers, 10 autism specialists, 10 teachers, 10 parents of children with autism and 20 members of the general Portuguese population. This study aims to contribute to the construction of a more enlightened, fair, equitable and integrative society for people with autism and their families.
