RT Journal Article T1 A new pattern of the moisture transport for precipitation related to the drastic decline in Arctic sea ice extent A1 Gimeno Sotelo, Luis A1 Nieto Muñiz, Raquel Olalla A1 Vázquez Domínguez, Marta A1 Gimeno Presa, Luis K1 2508.10 Precipitación K1 2501.22 Física de las Precipitaciones AB In this study we use the term moisture transport for precipitationfor a target region as the moisture coming to this region from its majormoisture sources resulting in precipitation over the target region (MTP). Wehave identified changes in the pattern of moisture transport forprecipitation over the Arctic region, the Arctic Ocean, and its 13 mainsubdomains concurrent with the major sea ice decline that occurred in 2003. Thepattern consists of a general decrease in moisture transport in summer andenhanced moisture transport in autumn and early winter, with differentcontributions depending on the moisture source and ocean subregion. Thepattern is statistically significant and consistent with changes in thevertically integrated moisture fluxes and frequency of circulation types. Theresults of this paper also reveal that the assumed and partially documentedenhanced poleward moisture transport from lower latitudes as a consequence ofincreased moisture from climate change seems to be less simple and constantthan typically recognised in relation to enhanced Arctic precipitationthroughout the year in the present climate.
