Understanding ecological, and socio-economical vulnerabilities is fundamental towards developing and implementing regional adaptation strategies to climate change. The Portuguese coast is situated in a transition zone between temperate ecosystems to the north, and subtropical with Mediterranean characteristics, to the south, with distinct oceanographic regions (north, centre, and south), fish assemblages and socioeconomic realities of fish communities across these regions. We develop a framework to assess fisheries climate vulnerability in each port. A total of 32 ecological and socio-economic indicators were used to measure exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity of the fishing sector to climate change by combining i) environmental projections ii) information from fishing communities (surveys at ports) and iii) landings and socio-economic data from official statistics offices. The vulnerability to climate change across regions, and its expected impact on fishing fleets and local communities, was low-moderate. Such information will enable fishing communities and decision makers to respond to expected climate change effects and direct/indirect associated activities. This framework comprises background information for developing mandatory EU climate adaptation plans that aim to improve the resilience of fisheries socio-economic systemsen

Special thanks to the partners of the CLIMAPESCA project: ANOPCERCO (Associação Nacional das Organizações de Produtores da Pesca do Cerco); OLHAOPESCA (Organização de Produtores de Pesca do Algarve); VIANAPESCA (Organização de Produtores Vianapesca); BIVALMAR (Bivalmar, Organização de Produtores); AAPCS (Associação de Armadores de Pesca Artesanal do Centro e Sul); ARMALGARVE (Associação Armalgarve Polvo – Organização de Produtores); APARA (Associação de Pesca Artesanal da Região de Aveiro); ADAPI (Associação dos Armadores da Pesca Industrial) and GAL Pesca Oeste (Grupo de Ação Litoral Pesca Oeste). These entities played a very important role in ensuring the success of the field surveys/interviews with fishers. We also want to express our gratitude to organizations outside of the project partnerships, for their help in carrying out field surveys/interviews with fishers. These were: APROPESCA (Organização de Produtores da Pesca Artesanal); PROPEIXE (Cooperativa de Produtores de Peixe do Norte); APN (Associação de Pescadores da Nazaré) and Barlapescas (Cooperativa Dos Armadores Pesca Do Barlavento). This gratitude is also extended to all fishers who participated in the inquiries. A special recognition to the Docapesca Portos e Lotas, SA, for allowing access to their port facilities which were essential in facilitating contact with fishers, allowing for a smoother process of fisher interviews/surveys.spa
