ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is twofold: firstly, it presents a general overview of the evidentiality system in Galician, and secondly, it explores the use of its marker seica. We will argue that, apart from the core evidential meanings, which are independent of epistemic modality, the evidential markers in conversation index social meanings related to asymmetry of epistemic authority, face-saving strategies, detachment, irony, and deference towards the hearer. The territory of information model plays a crucial role in the selection of a specific evidential and this includes taking into consideration the perspective of the listener. We will claim that Galician evidential markers aim less at the attenuation of the speaker's commitment, and more at conveying negative politeness. Regarding seica, this unit presents a broad spectrum of meanings, ranging from all types of inferential values to hearsay and quotative meanings. Nuances of epistemic modal doubt, mutual shared knowledge and mirativity can be added depending on the context.
